He took my sin.

Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Remember in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer when the kids in the neighborhood were fooled into trading their trinkets and toys in exchange for doing Tom's chore of whitewashing the fence?

That's not nearly as bad as when Jacob of the Old Testament conned Esau into trading his birthright. Of course, that's not nearly as bad a deal as Jacob's sons selling their own brother, Joseph, for 30 measly pieces of silver. We could go on and on through the history of bad deals, but what I'll never understand is why the precious, perfectly holy, loving Son of God exchanged His righteousness for my salvation.

Sawyer, Jacob, and Joseph's brothers made their exchanges based on greed, but it was the very love of God that caused the Immortal to value my soul enough to die a mortal death. He saw my heart that was full of murder and adultery, my tongue full of poison and fire, and feet that were swift to run to wickedness and took it all upon Himself. In turn, He gave me a robe of righteousness. He washed me white as snow. He set my feet upon the Rock and established my goings.

It was a deal that none of us would've made. But the love of God compelled Him to receive my griefs, sorrows, transgressions, and iniquities, and chastisement to give me peace and healing in return. Christian, take a deep breath of the rich freedom that He has purchased and provided you. And with each of those breaths, go on loving and serving Him because He is worthy!
